A rich, multifaceted look at Roald Dahl’s character. Set in one room, the action is propelled forward by dialogue alone: a series of domestic interludes, witty repartee and increasingly outrageous antisemitic remarks by the great author. Bracing and unswerving examination of a beloved author whose genuine humanitarianism has curdled into extreme bigotry, accompanied by bullying and hectoring treatment of those around him, grandiosity and perversity. This cracker is my absolute play of the year (so far). John Lithgow is stunning as Dahl and Romola Garai, Elliot Levey and Rachael Stirling are also wonderful. The depiction of Dahl is both subtle and shocking and his antisemitism very up to date. An added bonus are some very funny lines.Read more →
