About My Master Builder

Ewan McGregor stars in My Master Builder, Lila Raicek’s modern take on Ibsen, directed by Michael Grandage. Previews begin 17 April at Wyndham’s Theatre, running until 12 July. Set in the Hamptons, the story follows an architect whose party is upended by a former student.

The Story Unfolds: Origins and Evolution

My Master Builder is a bold reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s The Master Builder, crafted by acclaimed playwright Lila Raicek.

Set in the Hamptons, the story follows architect Henry Solness as his wife, Elena, hosts a July 4th party to celebrate his latest work. However, the evening spirals into chaos when Mathilde, a former student with whom Henry shares a complicated history, arrives unexpectedly. Themes of love, ambition, and power collide in this gripping exploration of modern relationships and sexual politics.

Premiering in the West End on 17 April 2025 at Wyndham’s Theatre, My Master Builder marks a triumphant return to the London stage for Ewan McGregor, who stars as Henry Solness. Directed by Michael Grandage, the production runs until 12 July, with further casting to be announced.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Spectacle

My Master Builder brings together an exceptional creative team. Directed by Michael Grandage, renowned for his work on Guys and Dolls and Othello, the play reunites him with McGregor after nearly two decades. The production is co-produced by Grandage’s company MGC, MarketStall, and Seaview.

Lila Raicek, a New York-based playwright, has gained recognition for her innovative works such as Fire Season and Tulla. This collaboration marks her first major West End production, adding to her growing reputation as a vital voice in contemporary theatre.
