About Till the Stars Come Down

The National Theatre’s smash-hit, sold-out production of Till The Stars Come Down transfers to the West End this summer for a strictly limited 13-week run. It’s Sylvia and Marek’s wedding and you’re all invited. Over the course of a hot summer’s day, a family gathers to welcome a newcomer into their midst. But as the vodka flows and dances are shared, passions boil over and the limits of love are tested. This ‘utterly unmissable theatrical event’ (WhatsOnStage), written by Beth Steel (The House of Shades) and directed by Bijan Sheibani (Barber Shop Chronicles), is a passionate, heartbreaking and ‘deliriously funny’ (Telegraph) portrayal of a larger-than-life family struggling to come to terms with a changing world.

The Story Unfolds: Origins and Evolution

Till the Stars Come Down tells the passionate and heart-wrenching story of a larger-than-life family navigating the challenges of a changing world, all set against the backdrop of Sylvia and Marek's wedding day. Over the course of a hot summer’s day, a family gathers to welcome a newcomer into their midst, but as the vodka flows and dances are shared, passions boil over, testing the limits of love and loyalty. What happens when the happiest day of your life opens the door to a new, frightening, and uncertain future?

Written by acclaimed playwright Beth Steel, Till the Stars Come Down originally premiered at the National Theatre in 2024, where it sold out and received critical acclaim. Steel, a former writer-in-residence at the National Theatre, brings a beautifully observed and brutally funny narrative to life. Directed by Olivier Award-winning Bijan Sheibani, known for his work on A Taste of Honey and Barber Shop Chronicles, the play explores themes of family, love, and the inevitable passage of time. Incredible tension building paired with heart-stirring humour enrich the production, making it an unforgettable theatrical experience.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Spectacle

The creative team behind the play includes director Bijan Sheibani, set and costume designer Samal Blak, lighting designer Paule Constable, choreographer and movement director Aline David, and sound designer Gareth Fry. The revival director is Elin Schofield, while casting directors Juliet Horsely CDG and Alistair Coomer CDG play key roles in bringing the production to life. The play’s intimate nature allows audience members to sit on stage, offering a truly immersive experience.

The production's impressive accolades include a nomination for 'Best New Play' at the 2024 Olivier Awards, and the script itself is lauded for its blend of joy, pain, and dark humour, making Till the Stars Come Down a must-see show in London's West End.
